Title: Salivary Alpha-Amylase Reactivity in Breast Cancer Survivors

Authors: Wan C, Couture-Lalande MÈ, Narain TA, Lebel S, Bielajew C

Summary of Abstract:

This study looked at two primary components of the stress system which are the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axis (SAM). The study went on to state the role of cortisol, a hormone in the human body that is responsible for a myriad of processes, and how it is used as a biomarker of HPA functioning but not used frequently for SAM functioning. That being said, the researchers gathered 22 female participants who were breast cancer survivors and 26 female participants who had no medical history of cancer. In doing so, their results showed that breast cancer survivors exhibited nearly the same levels of alpha-amylase concentrations in both diurnal and acute profiles similar to those of healthy women. As a result of this outcome, the researchers concluded that the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axis needs to be further investigated.

Title: The contributions of arousal and self-focused attention avoidance in social anxiety

Authors: Grisham JR, King BJ, Makkar SR

Summary of Abstract:

This study focused on social anxiety, with a total sample size of 57 participants. Half of which were said to be high socially anxious and the other half low socially anxious. The researchers had the participants look at socially threatening and non-socially threatening faces, and the researchers found that the regression analyses showed that arousal, as indexed by salivary alpha-amylase worked as a predictor of those participants who were high socially anxious.

Title: Highlights in clinical autonomic neuroscience: new insights into autonomic dysfunction in autism

Authors: Cheshire WP

Summary of Abstract:

This study looked at children with autism spectrum disorders and the correlations between autonomic findings and psychological behavior. The studies performed looked at heart rate variability, pupil size, salivary alpha-amylase, and electrodermal responsiveness. All of which showed that children with ASD differ from normally developing children in autonomic responsiveness in interpreting human faces.
